Presentation of InterSeA Project

Posted on 13 November 2025

The outcomes of InterSeA research project, aiming at the development of autonomous sampling tools for the monitoring of sea – atmosphereinterfaceincoastalareas, were disseminated in a workshop realized on Tuesday 9/9/2025, from 10:00 to 15:00, in the Town Hall of Elefsis, in Elefsis town.

Technological development, testing procedures, validation of theInterSeA system and results produced during its application were presented, highlighting the interdisciplinary approach followed within the project framework, combining oceanography, analytical techniques and autonomous systems engineering. The potential of effective and reliable application of the USV in environmental monitoring, even in areas with intense anthropogenic pollution, was demonstrated.

Emphasis was given to the analysis of data reported from the industrially impacted Elefsis gulf, highlighting the strong spatial variability characterizing the concentrations of organic carbon, hydrocarbons and metals. The event promoted fruitful discussions among representatives from scientific institutes, EYDAP, municipalities and environmental management agencies, on USV applications and its potential integration in environmental management networks.

The interaction among students and young researchers of NKUA with members of the research group, promoting their acquaintance with the study of the marine environment, was also valuable. The total presentation of the project successfully combined scientific visibility, collaboration with stakeholders and information of the public, demonstrating the establishment of a solid foundation for future research and technological evolution in marine monitoring, with autonomous systems.

The results exposed demonstrated that innovative technologies can effectively contribute to the improvement of coastal waters monitoring and protection, enhancing national and European initiatives of their sustainable development and assisting competent bodies in their effort to comply with EU legislation, such as WFD and MSFD and contribute to the aspirations of EU Green Deal.
